Bangladesh Set to Buy China’s J-10C Fighter Jets?

In late 2024, Bangladesh began discussions with China to acquire the JF-17 Block 3 and the more advanced J-10C fighter jets. With the recent escalation between India and Pakistan, China’s J-10C has once again made headlines. Pakistan has claimed that it used these jets to shoot down five Indian aircraft, including three Rafale fighters. While Indian officials deny the full extent of these claims, French intelligence has reportedly confirmed the downing of at least one Rafale. Analysts now believe the J-10C could significantly enhance Bangladesh’s air defense capability.

According to a report published by China’s South China Morning Post on December 19, 2024, top Bangladeshi government and air force officials are moving closer to finalizing a deal for the J-10C. This strategic move aims not only to modernize the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) but also to shift the balance of air power in South Asia.

The J-10C is one of the most modern multirole fighter aircraft in the arsenal of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). Equipped with an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, a post-combustion single engine, and the long-range PL-15 missile, it is capable of performing in real combat scenarios. Multiple international outlets have corroborated its performance during recent regional tensions, proving its capability beyond theoretical performance.

Currently, the Bangladesh Air Force relies on aircraft such as the aging MiG-29s, Chinese F-7BGs, F-7MB Tiger Sharks, and Yak-130 trainers. Many of these are based on outdated technology. Political and diplomatic complexities make procurement from Western nations both expensive and difficult. In contrast, China offers modern, affordable solutions with fewer geopolitical hurdles, making it an attractive option for Bangladesh.

A 2024 analysis by Military Watch Magazine indicates that Bangladesh is considering a “high-low pairing” strategy—using the cost-effective JF-17s for regular patrols and basic defense roles, while deploying the powerful J-10C for advanced strike missions.

Bangladesh’s pivot toward Chinese military technology reflects both strategic prudence and economic practicality. Observers believe this move will play a vital role in shaping the country’s future defense posture, especially given the shifting dynamics of warfare and diplomacy in the South Asian region.
